How To Overcome Fear of Failure

We all have fears. We all have moments in our life when we are unsure. When I was 17 years old, I was both scared and unsure. The decision I made in that moment changed my life in ways I could never imagine…

That week, my family and I moved from Europe to the United States. Most of those first years in the United States are a blur to me now, but I remember coming home from school one day after receiving a D+ in English class. I was devastated to say the least. I was used to being a good student with good grades, however, learning a new language was getting to me. It was right then and there that I came to a conclusion which helped me overcome many difficult challenges later in life.

What is failure anyway? While receiving a D+ in English class felt like a failure to me then, I realized a very important fact about failure we often overlook— that is — failure is temporary. Failure doesn’t last. Failure is learning. Failure is just part of it. I was quickly forced to changed the way I viewed failure. It became part of the process and a temporary bridge I needed to cross to get where I wanted to go. Six months after that life changing afternoon, I was accepted into the Honors program in my high school and went on to graduate from UCLA.

I have used this philosophy in every aspect of my life. I am not afraid to fail. Neither should you. There is one SECRET ingredient in this recipe to take into account, that is persistence. You see, I had no choice but to be persistent and not give up on learning English. That’s why I now know that a D+ will always become an A. With most failures we give up, walk away and say I couldn’t do it. And that is why we don’t succeed. Not being afraid to FAIL and being PERSISTENCE are the two things you NEED to become successful in anything.

Think back to a time in your life when you were bad at something, you “failed”. What did you do? How did it feel? Do you think you can change your attitude the next time you fail? Can you get back up and do better the next time around? What if failure was temporary and you knew that over time, you will reach your goal?

What if you had the same attitude when it comes to fulfilling your DREAMS? What could you accomplish? ANYTHING.
